Arauna Ark Restoration centre is situated in the tranquil foothills of the world renowned Valley of a Thousand Hills. The centre is not only for those with substance abuse or addiction issues but also for those who have simply lost direction and cannot survive in our harsh society.
We do not advertise or charge exorbitant fees however we receive calls nationwide purely through word of mouth, due to our unique restoration method which is basic, honest and is successful.
Using good Christian values our residents are motivated to work on their issues from within and to encourage themselves to develop a sense of self worth which in turn builds self esteem.
The restoration Centers main focus is “Healing with Horses”
Residents are put in charge of the wellbeing, grooming, feeding, training and general health of our select group of competitive endurance horses, who compete from novice up to National level.
The impact on the person when they realize the responsibility they have been given combined with the bond which is formed between man and 400kg’s of beast is possibly the most therapeutic emotion they have ever and will ever experience.

How does one capture the essence of a rehabilitation Centre worthy or able to transform a manipulative self-pleasing addict to recognize his former choices and directions as failure. Is the secret in ensuring the sponsor or parents attribute of providing a medical facility with the latest medicine and best psychiatrist’s available? Would a clean environment and clinical conditions help ease away the discomfort of realizing a loved one’s inability to perform in the “real world”? Sadly, once the individual has reached “rehab status” it is often too late to persuade him that somewhere along the line something went wrong. Realistically speaking, it’s by now that one needs to accept that a wrong thought pattern has evolved. The individual has to recognize a falsehood in general altering the total outcome of his future. To find healing is a long and tough journey.
I arrived at the Arauna Ark Restoration Centre near Durban on the thirteenth of January 2011 after a hellish trip all the way from Potchefstroom. Hellish because I had to leave everything I had at home with very little prospect of seeing it soon again. My career as a professional hairstylist hanging in the balance and after drifting through most of the rehab facilities in Gauteng, it was time to consider affordable alternatives. More so, it was time to realize the predicament I’ve managed to get myself in through years of addiction. At first glance the establishment looked rather cozy and peaceful. Very quickly however, I realized a dramatic reality of circumstances. It was a place filled with people who chose to carry on with wrong choices and ended up homeless, without love or care whatsoever from the outside world. The reality struck me boldly that they were people like me, only ten years later! All my life I’ve driven past them, seeing them beg and occasionally helping them, but now I was faced with the decision of becoming one of them. I did the only thing I knew and buried myself in my Bible for the first couple of weeks. Politely greeting now and then but that was about it. I had this strange resistance towards most of them. My rocking journey has unannounced begun and I was in for the ride of my life.
The real world started playing out right in front of my eyes in the most severe state I’ve ever imagined. I quickly realized I’ve entered a spiritual warzone fighting none other than my own demons. Those are the worst monsters to concur considering twenty years of addiction.
The restoration center at arauna provides you with FULL responsibility over real life fully conditioned, trained endurance horses. This is a very heavy load on anybody who’s just walked away from an alcohol or drug spree! Owner Gary Purchase is a well-recognized endurance rider who has ridden for Natal at the tri-nations event over 120 km where he came sixth(erasa heavy weight div). With Arauna ark being a nonprofit org. we can hardly rely on vets to keep our horses healthy. Everything, from grooming to taking temps to feeding and administering medications is our own responsibility. Come to think of it, it’s more than a winning recipe to keep my mind off all unhealthy and ungodly things. Hence the saying, “evil flourishes where good men do nothing”
The people and situations became harder by the day. Trials and tribulations became more frequent but somehow I dealt with it and even provided friends with sufficient advice to handle it.
Slowly I started becoming skilled in areas where I would normally have been hiding. Conflict was something I’ve never learned to handle but by God’s grace and endless perseverance I started overcoming fear! Eventually I joined the praise and worship team being able to face crowds of up to a hundred people behind a guitar and microphone! I learned to be one hundred percent dependent on Jesus Christ and could recognize my own life being transformed into His likeness. For the first time ever I’ve realized my purpose in life! The more I trusted and persevered, clothed in humility, the more I experienced God’s favor upon my life. I was invited to start endurance racing with Gary personally. A privilege I believe will rarely happen again to anyone! In the meantime, I became leader of the horse boys and am currently running the restoration center with the prospects of opening a hair salon on a wooden deck right in the center of the ministry’s nursery overlooking the most beautiful little restaurant called “Rebel's Rock”.
I’ve discovered that my whole life was designed to prepare me for the privilege of helping others in the same predicament as myself and by moving and staying in God’s will I’ll never have to fight alone. As far as fancy unaffordable rehabs go, they couldn’t help me at the time but then I suppose it’s all about timing but then again time is money so I guess if we spent our money correctly we might get our timing right!.
I owe my life to people who were obedient to their calling in creating the kind of environment that was life changing enough for me to finally meet my savior and I will dedicate my life to serving others in finding Jesus Christ and reaching eternal life…

A normal day starts at 05h30:
Ø Feeding time for the horses.
Ø 06h00 Breakfast.
Ø 07h00 – 07h30. 50 day bible study course.
Ø 07h45 – 08h30 Daily devotions during which residents are motivated to have a personal input as to the choice of scriptures and songs of praise, this time spent in fellowship is a time of healing and rejuvenation of both body and soul.
Ø 08h30 – 10h00 Temperature, eating disorders, observation of horses for movement or muscular inconsistencies are carried out. Lunging of horses.
Ø 10h00 Tea
Ø 10h30 Grooming: Curry combing, soft brush, hoof cleansing, mane and tail brushing, wet sponge-down, hoof greasing and skin condition checks are essential.
Ø 11h30-13h00 Cleaning and maintenance of Stable’s and Paddock area.
Ø 13h00 – 13h30 Lunch.
Ø 13h30 – 15h30 Various course’s in training, riding, feeding, grooming and general handling of horse’s in the form of DVD’s and practical lectures.
Ø 15h30 – 16h30 Advanced course’s in competition grooming including hands on training with competitive riders.
Ø 16h30 – 17h00 Horse feeding.
Ø 17h00 - Supper.
Ø 18h00 – 20h00 Discipleship school.
Ø 20h00 – 20h30 Horse feeding.
Ø 20h30 – 22h00 Personal time.
Ø 22h00 - Lights out.
The restoration centre works on an availability basis, a maximum of 8 residents at a time may be accommodated, Donations are R 9000. 00 for three months; thereafter R1500. 00 per month for the duration of the resident’s restoration period.
